"Art captures a unique impression of our world while becoming a window into our soul."

-Tom DeSomer

I've always loved to create. ever since I was young, I would spend hours drawing both from references as well as from my imagination. Much of my childhood memories take me back to our dining room table or to the garage where we spent hours creating all kinds of "stuff" with my family. Art for me has always been exciting...and always personally rewarding.

After graduating high school, I attended the American Academy of Art. The instruction I received there moved me beyond simple amateur approaches and provided me with the tools to pursue a career as a commercial illustrator.  It was also there where I was highly influenced and inspired by Irving Shapiro, a true master in the art of watercolor painting.

Shortly after completing the program, I was hired at Eaton & Iwen, a premier illustration studio located in the city  of Chicago where I created hand illustrated storyboards for animated features, films and commercials as well as a variety of ad campaigns. I worked alongside of art directors and marketing specialists providing quality marker renderings and illustrations for a number of clients including Suave, Kraft Foods, Oldsmobile, Keebler, McDonalds, Quaker Oats and Kellogg's.

Through a number of events, life-changing decisions and faith-filled risks (it's a long story), I left the studio for the classroom and studied theology - eventually receiving both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Christian Ministries. I've served in a variety of ministry leadership roles in Indiana, New York, Chicago and Ventura County, California.

As an artist, I am unashamedly traditional in my approaches to this water medium. I paint with large, bold, colorful brush strokes creating symbols and shapes that allow the colors to blend on the paper and draw the viewer into the work. Painting with Arches 140lb cold press paper and Daniel Smith paints, I can think of no other place I would rather be to unwind and relax than in my private art studio.

I believe that art is essential to life - it captures a unique impression of our world while becoming a window into our soul. Thank you for visiting desomerart.com. It's still a work in progress. Enjoy. Be inspired. Email me your thoughts. I would love to hear from you.
